While each of these levels work on their own, a well established security system will use all four levels to complement each other.

The initial layer of security for any office or premises uses crime prevention through environmental design to deter threats. The most common examples are usually the most simple ideas; barbed wire fence, warning signs, barriers and lighting.

Mechanical access control includes gates, doors and locks. While this may be suitable for a small team, keyed access within a large organisation may become an expensive exercise with lost keys and accountability. The next step up would be integrating an electronic access control system (PIN numbers, swipe cards). Electronic passes can be programmed to a certain lifecycle, within certain timeframes and can be enabled and disabled from a central location.

A Nurse Call System has the potential to be a grand design with a lot of intelligent integration from a Nurse Call button, a resident Pendant, to a full multimedia bed pendant. The main common point to all Nurse Call systems is that the staffs are notified and then responds to the call. With the integration of a DECT system, a Staff member can receive a Nurse call or Staff assist from any location within the facility and with an audio option can talk to the resident or staff member to understand what the call is in relation to, and therefore send the appropriate assistance.
